On August 1, 1981, the change was flicked and the revolution began. “Ladies and gentlemen,” intoned a deep male voice, “rock’n’roll.” 

That was the moment a manufacturer new channel named MTV – small for New music Television – was released in New Jersey. Its remit was uncomplicated: to produce the visual equivalent of a radio programme, except singles had been replaced by new music videos, and DJs grew to become VJs, or video jockeys.
