Hopping multiple genres including folk, jazz, country, pop and rock, she also plays with art-rock band Mallory Chipman & the Mystics and alt-country outfit The Goddamsels.

“It is with gratitude and excitement that I step into the role of musician in residence with EPL and the rich, vibrant network of artists and creators here in Edmonton,” says Chipman. “To be the inaugural artist in this position is an honour I do not take lightly, and I look forward to facilitating musical opportunities and celebrating the artistic excellence in our community over the coming year.”

Starting this week, Chipman will spend time on the third floor of EPL’s Stanley A. Milner Library downtown, including in the Makerspace recording studios.

“While the specifics of the programming have yet to be announced,” 29-year-old Chipman notes, “I am happy to share that there will be a mix of both mentorship opportunities and community collaboration and presentation opportunities centred around nurturing creativity and play; songwriting and production; musician’s health and wellness, and more.

“All of this will be offered to musicians at any and all stages of their career via one on one sessions and group classes and workshops.”

Musicians of any skill level are invited to take advantage of these workshops or sign up for her mentorship in the coming weeks at epl.ca/musician-in-residence — all at no charge.

Eight years ago, EPL also launched the award-winning Capital City Records, working with 250 artists and producing 300 albums since. During her term, Chipman will act as the lead curator and jury member for Capital City Records during the open submissions cycle.

“The Musician in Residence program is well on its way with the announcement of our inaugural member,” says Pilar Martinez, CEO of EPL. “We are thrilled to be supporting the city’s established and aspiring music community and feel fortunate to have Mallory as our trailblazing artist on this legacy project.”

The position is being supported by the non-profit, member-based association, Alberta Music, and the opportunity to host and steward the musician in residence was made possible by the 2023 Junos Host Committee.

“This program will not only showcase the wealth of talent in the City of Edmonton,” says Alberta Music’s CEO Carly Klassen, “but also act to help further develop the talent and nurture young and upcoming artists and songwriters.

“The legacy of this program will carry forward and increase the awareness and quality of art being created in this city.”

The musician-in-residence program follows a long tradition of the EPL hosting a writers-in-residence program — this year’s being speculative fiction author Kate Boorman.

Chipman’s residency runs through May 31, 2024.
